Young Frankenstein, officially known as The New Mel Brooks Musical: Young Frankenstein, is a musical with a book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan and music and lyrics by Brooks. It is based on the 1974 comedy film of the same name written by Brooks and Gene Wilder and directed by Brooks, who has described it as his best film. It is a parody of the horror film genre, especially the 1931 Universal Pictures adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
The original, Broadway production was nominated for three Tony awards and won the 2008 Outer Critics Circle award for best musical.
Plot: Grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced "Fronk-en-steen") inherits his family's estate in Transylvania. With the help of a hunchbacked sidekick, Igor (pronounced "Eye-gore"), and a leggy lab assistant, Inga (pronounced normally), Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. "It's alive!" he exclaims as
he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather's. Eventually, of course, the monster escapes and hilarity continuously abounds.
With this production of "Young Frankenstein", the RC Theatre introduced computerized projection technology to enable numerous scene changes on a unit set. The RCT reached new heights in the design and construction of the innovative set for this show. The talented cast was accompanied by a 16 piece orchestra from Hunterdon Central Regional High School, conducted by Music Director Will Magalio, with choreography by Assistant Director Cindy Magalio.
